The St. Nicholas Book Club postponed their monthly meeting as it conflicted with Holy Week services. They next meet April 8, 2026.
The Book Club has selected Raising Hare, a reflective memoir by Chloe Dalton. In February 2021, Dalton stumbles upon a newborn hare – a leveret – that had been chased by a dog. Fearing for its life, she brings it home, only to discover how difficult it is to rear a wild hare, most of whom perish in captivity from either shock or starvation.
The book follows the hare’s growth from a fragile, bottle-fed infant to an independent adult that moves freely between Dalton’s home and the surrounding fields, forming an unusual bond built on trust rather than domestication. Alongside the day-to-day story, Dalton weaves in observations about hare behavior, natural history, folklore, and the emotional complexity of caring for a wild creature that can never truly belong to her. The result is a meditation on freedom, connection, and the delicate boundary between the human world and the wild.
